If an unauthorised party has logged into your Facebook account, then you’re far from alone.

New official statistics revealed by the social networking giant reveal that 0.06% of the more than billion logins that they have each day are compromised.

Put another way, that’s more than 600,000 per day – or, if you really like to make your mind melt, one every 140 milliseconds. (By comparison, a blink of the eye takes 300-400 milliseconds)

  1. PC users: install a free VNC server like TightVNC (Macs have one built in
  2. Sign up for a domain name service like DynDNS, which lets you assign an easy-to-remember name (myname.is-a-geek.net, for example) to your home computer’s ever-changing IP address.
  3. Configure port forwarding on your home router to allow remote access (check the manual for directions.) Don’t have a router? Try a web-based app like LogMeIn.
  4. Install a VNC viewer for the remote machine. (For Macs, try Chicken of the VNC; for PCs, TightVNC’s viewer is good.) Now simply enter your home computer’s domain name and you’re in!
  5. Remember; VNC isn’t secure. If you’re worried about eavesdroppers, ask someone to help you set up an encrypted SSH tunnel.

What does a bill like PIPA/SOPA mean to our shareable world? At the TED offices, Clay Shirky delivers a proper manifesto — a call to defend our freedom to create, discuss, link and share, rather than passively consume.

Today, Apple rolled out it’s iOS 5 for iPhones, iPods, and iPads, as well as an update for OS X Lion to version 10.7.2. All updates that are being pushed out are quite big (iOS 5 is 668MB, 10.7.2 is 435.5MB, and Lion Recovery update is 452.5MB)

As parents, we all want to keep our kids safe. When they ride their bicycles, we have them wear a helmet to avoid nasty falls. We teach them to never speak to strangers and we have them look both ways when they cross the street. Raising children is a hard job, and often times, it takes more than just two parents to do so–it takes an entire community.

With the rise of the Internet and children becoming more technologically savvy, parents have to be on-guard against nefarious websites that are set up to either damage the family computer or may cause direct harm to your child. Many machines comes with anti-virus software right out of the box, but how do you protect your child from going to those websites that have malicious software or pornography without expensive or difficult to set up software?

The fine folks at OpenDNS are here to help with their FamilyShield product. Here’s how it works:

1. FamilyShield works at the DNS level, where domain names are mapped to corresponding IP addresses. OpenDNS keeps a database of offending websites and incorporates it into their products.

  • Adult websites that are unsuitable for kids
  • Proxy and anonymizer sites commonly used by savvy kids to bypass traditional Web filters
  • Phishing sites that aim to trick you into handing over personal or financial information
  • Some virus-spreading malware websites
So, if you have one of those children who are a little smarter than their parents when it comes to using the net and getting around site blockers, FamilyShield is one step ahead of them. If you notice, the last bullet-point states that SOME malware sites will be blocked. The reason for this is that there are so many malicious websites erected daily that even fully staffed anti-virus companies have a difficult time keeping up.
To begin using FamilyShield on your shared family PC, head over to the FamilyShield website and follow their step-by-step instructions (don’t worry, there are pictures!) http://www.opendns.com/home/familyshield
You may notice that there are instructions for both routers and PC’s, we suggest that you use the product on the PC and the regular OpenDNS service on the router.

One annoyance that users of the new Apple OS X Lion (10.7) have been complaining about has been the change from Spaces to Mission Control. Well, it looks like Freemium Technology Services may have a fix for you.

In Spaces, you could assign applications to certain hot key combinations, such as CRTL + 1 and this would bring up, let’s say, the Safari web browser. You could also assign other applications to other Spaces and switch to them by pressing CTRL + 2 and so on.

Mission Control is a little different but the effect is the same and can be re-created by doing the following:

1. Go to Mission Control under System Preferences.

2. Uncheck the option Automatically rearrange spaces on most recent use.

3. For example: Scroll up with 3 fingers simultaneously or launch Mission Control from the Dock. Click on Desktop 3. While you are in Desktop 3 launch iPhoto. Double check with a right click on the iPhoto symbol in the Dock. Choose options. Confirm This Desktop

* To make the behavior more like Spaces, uncheck the box When switching to an application, switch to a space with open windows for the application.
